GHA 29 Hillhead/Jordanhill 48
GHA fired in five tries as their farewell to Premier Two, but these were not enough for a
winning finale on Saturday. Hillhead/Jordanhill scored six, and by kicking their goals as
well, the Braidholm visitors even denied GHA a losing bonus point.
The visitors’ win was based on their heavier forward power. Yet from limited possession
the home team showed their willingness to run the ball wide, though it was from an
interception that Gregg Taylor put GHA ahead after only four minutes, the wing running
fully 70 metres up the left touchline to score.
Little more than half an hour later, however, the visitors led by 31-5 and had a bonus
point in the bag. Immediately after the Hills’ first try, a pushover after 10 minutes, the
GHA cause was hampered by the loss of Niall Cassie with a head knock, but just before
the interval, even though 26 points down, the home team persevered for Taylor to score
his second try, Jamie Pinder providing the offload.
Two more tries for the visitors in the four minutes after the interval finished off any GHA
hopes, but a 10-45 deficit did not deter the home team’s try-scoring ambitions. All of the
contest’s three remaining tries were theirs – scored between the 46th and 68th minutes.
Taylor and Ruairi O’Keefe created one for Josh Low, and Ross McClymont scored twice
– the first from good lead-up work by Pinder and Ruairi O’Keefe, the second from the
full back’s own break from 60 metres. O’Keefe, Cassie’s first-half replacement, converted
Low’s try and McClymont’s second.
Gus Twaddle had the game’s final score, his second penalty goal for a tally of 22 points,
including the six conversions. Hills’ try-scorers were Nick McAuley (in the pushover),
Davie Armstrong, Stuart Rose, Cammy McCulloch, Archie Millar, and Robbie Williamson.
GHA – Ross McClymont; Rangi Jericevich, Niall Cassie (captain), Dominic Dunn, Gregg
Taylor; Martin Dunn, Andrew Gillman; Matt Kidd, Chris Landsburgh, Josh Low, Dominic
Kellock, Geoff Warnock, David Stoddart, Andrew Campbell, Jamie Pinder. Replacements
– Mitch Gregory, Jamie Auld, Murray Houston, Ruairi O’Keefe.
