Hillhead Jordanhill 25 – 8 GHA

An excellent end to the season has seen the 2nd XV successfully retain their position in the Scottish 2ndXV League Division 2 and Tuesday night’s match under the lights at Hughenden against a promoted Hillhead side provided a stern test of progress. A physical first half display was capped with a fine opportunistic try for inside centre Scott Carson who took a quick tap on the Hillhead 5 metre line and rounded the disorganised defence to score in the corner. An earlier penalty from Scott and a soft try for the home side meant GHA went in 8 – 5 up at the half.

The second period saw sustained early pressure from Hillhead. A lapse in discipline led to left wing Paddy Hilley spending 10 mins in the bin for talking back to the referee in what was certainly a more than harsh decision. At this point the game opened up and Hillhead made the most their numerical advantage to score a try and penalty. Back to full strength, the game continued in a disjointed manner and GHA struggled to regain the structure to their game that they had shown in the first half. An injury time try for Hillhead capped off a disappointing night for the 2nds having shown so much promise early on.

The league season is concluded at home this Saturday against league champions Stewart’s Melville FP.
