GHA 2nd XV 64 Perthshire 2nd XV 0

This was coach Kenny Fairbairn’s assessment of the teams performance against a plucky Perthshire outfit. Both the home and away teams didn’t have their troubles to seek before hand but once the game got underway all these problems were forgotten. Within 10 minutes Ben Wright , GHA’s flying winger, had scored the first of his four tries.Paul harkins fielded the ball on his own 10m line. The ball fed to the wing who beat several players on the road to the try-line. In fact all of his tries came from the Perthshire 10m line or beyond. Not to be outdone by his fellow winger, Rangi Jericevich also scored twice in the first half, both being long range efforts and coming from excellent lineout ball provided by the forwards. Ben Farrell scored to ensure that the hard work done by the forwards did not go unrewarded. The 31-nil half-time score flattered GHA as for long periods of time Perthshire dominated but were unable to trouble the score board.

The second half was only 5 minutes old when from a turnover at scrum-time on the halfway line, Gregor Jones was fed the ball and he started the scoring . From the resultant restart the ball was fed to Ben Wright who did what he does best – score. in the second half the GHA forwards started to dominate at set piece time. Both Andy Rushforth and Ben Wright benefited from this improvement as the added a score apiece to make the score 59 – nil. There were other opportunities for the backline to add to their already huge tally but several opportunities were butchered and it took a forward to finish off the scoring for the afternoon. Paul Harkins decided to show Ben and Rangi how to be a winger. From a scrum on halfway the ball was fed along the backline to Rangi. When he was stopped the ball was recycled and found the no.8 recovering from his work in the scrum. Despite still having some work to do he was just about quick enough to go round the covering Perthshire front row forward. Job done. Murray Houston capped a fine personal performance by converting 8 of the tries.

Excellent result but still plenty of room for improvement before the game against Hamilton. Training as usual on Tuesday and Thursday – BE THERE.
