GHA will hope to bounce back from a disappointing opening day defeat as they face Peebles at The Gytes.

The Braidholm side’s return to the National League got off to a poor start as they lost 44-0 against Stewart’s Melville last Saturday. This week’s opponents Peebles are also hoping to kick start their season after a 44-22 defeat against Watsonians.

GHA Captain Andy Henderson is expecting a tough test against Peebles but despite last weekend’s result feels they can be competitive in the National League following promotion last season.

He said: “It will be tough against Peebles obviously they came up with us as well. They will be looking to start well but we have to get better and put in a better performance than we did against Stewart’s Melville.

“I think we were a bit off the pace. The last game last season we started to play some good rugby.

“I would think if we could get back to that level we were playing at the end of last season we would be more competitive in this league.

“However it is definitely a step up as we are playing against better teams.”

Saturday’s clash will be a battle between the two winners of the Championship division A and B last season. Last season’s target for GHA was to gain promotion to the National League. A target they achieved after beating Cartha Queens Park on the last day in a title decider to clinch promotion. However this season GHA captain Andy Henderson feels the team are focusing on the next game rather than setting a target this term.

He said: “At the moment we are just looking at the next game and trying to make improvements.

“We have lost some good players and we have some good players who are out injured.

“I think it is tricky to set goals but we will have to wait and see. All our focus is on this weekend.”
