A depleted GHA concluded their National League campaign with a record defeat at newly-crowned champions Boroughmuir. The Edinburgh side scored twelve tries to GHA’s solitary score, demonstrating the harsh lessons GHA will need to learn over the summer.

Boroughmuir benefited from early possession and Johnny Adams scored an early try after running through a gap round the fringes of a ruck. Ben Cooper added the extra points (7-0, 3’). The Meggetland men were determined to hold on to the ball, with Alex Cox messing up the GHA attacking line with a near interception. Johnny Adams stole a loose ball at a ruck, then Trent Sutton broke through to score the second try of the afternoon, converted by Ben Cooper (14-0, 6’).

An outstanding display of hands between Alex Cox, Craig Marshall, and Mark Hare led to the third try, scored by Ross Bradford in the right corner. Ben Cooper added the extras (21-0, 8’). Boroughmuir dominated the set pieces. GHA briefly recovered the ball but soon lost it because of a loose pass. Joni Hare was in for a try, converted by Ben Cooper (28-0, 18’).

The Glaswegians again tried to take the ball in, but the Muir forwards won the ball back at a ruck. Alex Cox found a gap in the defense and touched down. Ben Cooper added the extras (35-0, 24’). The former added another 5-pointer a few minutes later after he sprinted through some soft defence. Ben Cooper once again got the conversion (42-0, 29’).

Boroughmuir retained possession for the rest of the first act, with good runs notably by Trent Sutton and also excellent defensive work by Andy Rose. GHA’s Sean Fisher got yellow carded just before the break.

Half-Time: Boroughmuir 42-0 GHA

The hosts were still on a high after the restart. Craig Marshall and Ben Cooper took the ball up before offloading to Ross Bradford who raced away and touched down. The conversion was missed (47-0, 46’). Ross Bradford soon added another unconverted try after he received the ball from Craig Marshall who had sprinted through (52-0, 49’).

GHA came back a bit after this. There were a few attempts in attacks that didn’t really threaten the imperturbable Muir defence. Still, second row Jamie Auld eventually score an unconverted try (52-5, 62’). Boroughmuir almost immediately replied with an unconverted try by Jordan Edmunds after a clever kick by Mark Hare (57-5, 64’). The visitors then had possession of the ball but didn’t convert it into points as they didn’t see where the space was. Johnny Adams excellent catch after a GHA clearance kick made Muir regain possession, then Magnus Bradbury found a gap in the defence and touched down. Ben Cooper added the extras (64-5, 71’).

Muir kept up the good work, with a break by Jordan Edmunds on the left then a line break by Alex Cox on the right wing. Mark Hare scored yet another try, converted by Ben Cooper (71-5, 74’). The Meggetland men camped close to the visitors’ try line for the remaining few minutes, and Johnny Adams concluded the game with an unconverted try.
