GHA got their Cup campaign off to the perfect start with a convincing win over fellow RBS Championship side Ardrossan Accies.
Tries from Rangi Jericevich (2), Hefin O’Hare, Sean Fisher, Robbie Glen, a penalty try and 5
conversions plus 1 penalty from the boot of John Brogan gave the home side both the victory
and a 4 try bonus point. The result put them top of Group A in the RBS West Regional Cup ahead of Ayr by one point after the first round of games.
Head Coach Gordon MacPherson was pleased to get the Cup campaign off to a winning start. He said:
“I thought it was a very good performance. There was a lot of good play and our defence was better this week than it has been in the past weeks. We have made improvements in that department which was pleasing. Our backs and forwards combined well and never really let off. We kept the pressure on them throughout the whole game which was good. The guys really enjoyed having a week off from the league and they just went out and expressed themselves.”
GHA started well and some nice phase play allowed Hefin O’Hare to break clear before he rounded the full back to score in the corner.
Ardrossan hit back soon after with a well taken score before Rangi Jericevich touched down for GHA after a neat grubber through from Scott Lang put him clear. Despite plenty of pressure from GHA, it was Ardrossan who finished the first half the stronger when a second try and a penalty gave them a 15 to 14 half time lead. That was to be Ardrossan’s final points of the day however as GHA upped their game in the second half and put the West Coasters to the sword with 4 second half tries.
John Brogan regained the lead for GHA with a penalty 2 minutes into the second half. Tries then followed for prop Sean Fisher who bulldozed over from close range, shortly followed by a try for Robbie Glen who broke clear on a blind side foray from GHA.
Both tries were scored whilst GHA flanker Dominic Kellock was in the sin bin. Shortly after he returned, an Ardrossan forward was to receive a yellow which allowed GHA to dominate the scrums. And from a scrum 5 metres out, the GHA pack was marching forward when the Ardrossan scrummage broke up to leave the referee with no option but to award the penalty try.
With 5 minutes remaining, GHA scored their best try of the afternoon when Gillman took a quick tap on the half way. The ball was spun wide for replacement wing Gordon Adams who broke up the left wing, he was tackled on the 22 but managed to offload the ball to Jericevich who stepped inside the cover defence and went over for the try.
In the other fixture in GHA’s group, Ayr ran out winners over Hillhead/Jordanholl by 19 to 8. GHA travel to Millbrae to play Ayr next Saturday in a 12.30pm Kick Off.
