A long-awaited win for Glasgow Hutchesons Aloysians (GHA) as they continue to the next round in the Scottish Cup. After four straight losses against difficult oppositions, GHA claim a home victory over their local rivals Glasgow Accies with a 17-12 win.
With the attendance being almost a third of what would usually be expected, it was not a match to miss.
GHA had a stronger first half and within minutes of kick-off, had already charged their way deep into Glasgow Accies half. Glasgow Accies winger Kwesi O’Hare caused a knock which allowed Ruari Campbell to escape from a maul and score the first try of the game. GHA 5-0 Glasgow Accies.
Glasgow Accies found their footing and started to play more aggressively, with most of the first 40 camped in the home team’s half. Oli Nash came close to scoring his first try of the match when he managed to dart past the GHA line but with GHA under pressure, they cause an infringement, and a scrum is called. Glasgow Accies won the scrum allowing Murray Clunas to break through and equalise. GHA 5-5 Glasgow Accies.
With 27 minutes on the clock, both teams had grown frustrated by each other’s defence stopping most plays from gaining points. Any hope that GHA had of forcing Glasgow Accies out of their half was stumped by Andrew Storie’s kicks to safety forcing lineouts near the hosts’ touch. GHA claimed possession of the ball due to a knock on. Caleb Thomson bolted into the opposition’s half allowing Euan McKirdy to gain the ball and scores for GHA. GHA 10-5 Glasgow Accies.
The game continues for the second half and Glasgow Accies play with an attacking foot. Oli Nash found redemption as the GHA defensive line was sparse and Nash took advantage to cut through and score. Alex Cob made the first conversion of the match. GHA 10-12 Glasgow Accies.
With minutes left on the clock, GHA kicked deep into Glasgow Accies half and made it to the 22m line. Glasgow Accies lost possession over a ruck, Campbell gained the ball after a pass from Oscar Lonergan-Black. Campbell sprinted left and into the Glasgow Accies touch to score the final try of the game. Andrew Goudie made the conversion. GHA 17-12 Glasgow Accies.
The fans erupted when the final whistle was called as that win secured GHA a place in round three of the Scottish Cup. Ewing agreed that with this big win, it should have boosted the team’s morale and hopefully continue the GHA winning streak.
The fixtures for the third round are to still be decided.
The captain of GHA, Darid Ewing, mentioned that the game was well played from both teams. He felt that GHA played with the passion and skill that is desired by the team and ,bar a few mishaps, they deserved the victory.
