Jon Welsh, the Glasgow Warriors prop, has taken up a coaching role with his former club GHA for the coming season. Welsh, 27, was signed to the Warriors from GHA in 2008 and is closing in on 100 caps for the club as well as having been capped for Scotland. Jon has completed his UKCC Level 2 coaching qualification and will be taking up the role at GHA on a voluntary basis outside of his Warriors commitments.
Welsh joins the youthful new GHA coaching set-up headed up by Craig Sorbie, 29, who is being assisted by player/coach Peter Jericevich who has returned to the club from Ayr, senior forward Donald Malcolm and Andrew Henderson the former Warrior and Scotland International who is also the club captain.
Sorbie commented:
“To have Jon on board is fantastic news for the club. We want to build a professional environment at GHA that focuses on developing players who can hopefully follow in Jon’s footsteps and push for professional contracts.
“Having Jon as part of the coaching set up will be a great asset in helping to guide and develop our young players to the levels they need to get to if they are to make that step up.
“Jon is also a great personality with an infectious enthusiasm and he is someone that we know the boys will enjoy working with.
“Both myself and the fellow coaches are looking forward to working with him this season.”
